"Amplified Face Melter" (working title)
I love music. I grew up in a house with a piano. I played percussion in my middle school band. I would go to church and be more interested in the choir and music than any life lessons being handed out. My father attempted to introduced me to rock n' roll like the Beatles, but it wasn't until my sister snuck me her Nirvana and Pearl Jam records that I sold my soul. The uncontrolled feedback and the emotion-filled screams resonated with something deep inside of me.
I always have music on when I paint, and it undeniably has an effect on the emotions underlying the image. Painting along side a live band reverberates even higher. The music is infused within the paint, and it then becomes my job to illustrate the auditory assault. The music animates me and I animate the music.
My pal Jeff Van Dreel invited me into his basement jam session on Friday, and we had a good old fashioned multimedia manage a trois with his band mate. Their experimental guitar and drum duo is very spontaneous and exploratory, which makes for the perfect compliment to my style of painting. I look forward to more sessions in the coming weeks that will, hopefully, spawn a new music centric series of paintings for me. Stay tuned for face-melting updates in the future.
